(9/29) One of the problems with being "too" busy is falling behind in our reading. Wired Magazine's September issue had some amazing articles. Not the least of which was MIT Everywhere, an article describing MIT's Nobel-deserving project to put its entire catalog of courses online. Ever wanted to take an MIT course but felt the $41,000 tuition was a bit out of reach? Visit http://ocw.mit.edu.
(9/20) Sorry we've been gone so long. Tom's been busy driving to Okemos to teach Object Oriented Analysis & Design; Tif's been busy with our new son, Michael; and Joshua's going to a new school, bowling, and playing soccer.
Tiffani starts back to work on Monday, September 22, but only until October 30. That'll be it. We hope somone's planning a party. Regardless, we'll be whooping-it-up somewhere.
Many of you know how interesting we think Supreme Court Opinions are to read. Now read this from Michigan Technology's "Computers and the Law":
Supreme Audio Now Online. Think William H. Rehnquist and Earl Warren, not Diana Ross. Hundreds of hours of U.S. Supreme Court legal arguments have been digitized to the Web at Oyez. And not just as text, but rather as rich multimedia experiences including audio, photos and text. Wanna hear Gratz v. Bollinger? Bush v. Gore? The site also includes a virtual tour of the Supreme Court building in Washington. Click over to http://www.oyez.org to try it out.
(9/3) Yesterday was both Jeannine (Gagne) Allen's and (Lee) Adrian Allen's birthdays! I won't tell you how old they are.
(8/16) Did you miss us? We missed you. As each of us suffered our own private withdrawl we were already making plans for the next blackout. Most had to do with buying a generator but after 29 hours the lights came back on and the generator didn't seem so necessary. Besides, it would be one more piece of ____ taking up room in the garage.
We hope everyone was able to sweat it out in good humor. Give us a call sometime and we'll tell you our blackout-of-2003 story. Until then its business as usual (thank Goodness and DTE).
(8/7) I know we have a lot of pictures to get up, but things haven't worked out to give me enough time to upload them all. We'll try next week. Hmm. Slow week? Busy week?
(7/26) Michael visited his Uncle Jeff today. Actually he's not really his uncle but a second cousin who, thanks to a greying beard, looks more like his Grandpa Jeff The young woman in the picture is Jeff's friend, Jennifer. Grandpa Jeff has never looked better.
(7/25) What is the sudden interest in driving tests for old people? Perhaps they are responsible for fewer accidents than teen age drivers. That probably makes the worse drivers men between 18 and 30, but I suspect that per mile driven, the latter group is among the safest drivers on the road.
(7/22) Some people reported trouble viewing pictures of the puppies yesterday and this morning. It appears some browsers don't link spaces in filenames. Hey, we didn't name the files. They came to us that way! The offending files have been renamed without spaces and everything should be OK.
We promised we'd have them ready tonight, and there's still 28 minutes to go! We have pictures of both Ryan and Michael when the former visited the latter today around 11:30AM. Aren't they cute? Originally they were supposed to be one month apart, but ended up being only eight days apart.
For those not in-the-know, Lisa (Ryan's mom) and Tiffani (Michael's mom) are holding each others' baby (did we say that correctly?).
Good job with the camera, David.
(7/21) Tom's brother Charlie Gagné has yellow, black, and chocolate labrador puppies available to good homes.
(7/19) Finally, we have some pictures of Ryan Eric Smith and the rest of the family. He and Michael look like cousins, don't they? Perhaps they just look like really cute babies.
(7/18) Our long last friends, Mo and Kris, arrived from Colorado today just to see Michael!. While here they'll also top by Mo's mother's 80 birthday party (convenient, eh?). I'll get their pictures up soon, too.
(7/17) Coming soon: Movie recommendations! We know everyone's dying to know what we think of all the movies we rent. Which ones did Tif fall asleep watching? Which ones did Tom watch 11 times? Which ones were turned off to watch SNL reruns? We haven't decided how to rank them, or even if Tif and Tom can agree on rankings. In the case of a tie your humble webmaster will cast the tie-breaking vote.
(4:15PM) Congratulations to David & Lisa on the birth of Ryan Eric Smith!! Rumor has it Lisa was expecting a normal check-up at the doctor's but was told instead to go home and pack for having a baby. At 1:59 PM she gave birth to a 20", 7 lb. 12 oz. baby boy. Everybody's doing fine, and if the RNs in the nursury would pop one Valium each, so too would David. Let him show-off his son!
We're hoping to have pictures soon. Perhaps we'll be visiting tomorrow?
(10:30AM) Tom's brother and sister-in-law, David & Lisa, are on their way to Royal Oak Beaumont Hospital for a 12 PM delivery of their newborn son, Ryan. We'll keep you posted and will hopefully have some pictures before the day is out.
Michael's uncle Kristin Luckey and neighbor Sue Nash stopped by for a visit. Everyone should know that the look on Michael's face is not Sue's fault. He was like that before she showed up.
(7/15) Too funny! In yesterday's Crain's Detroit Business daily email update, writer Bob Allen alerts us to a Google bomb. Visit http://www.google.com and enter the search words "french military victories" and press the I'm feeling lucky button. I wonder how many more of those there are?
(7/14) Michael's list of visitors continues to grow, and some of you may be astounded who's coming out of the woodwork. Yesterday Tom's guitar teacher and music director for St. Thomas More in Troy, Joe Blattert stopped by to see the new Gagné, and firm-up plans to start the young maestro Joshua on guitar lessons this fall. You may remember Joe if either you attended services at St. Thomas More or St. Alan--where the Saturday regulars wished they could have gone to St. Thomas More.
Michael's Grandpa Nelson also stopped by to see how the little tyke was doing.
Thanks to Aunt Colleen, Uncle Greg, and Kevin Pachutta for stopping by to see their new nephew/cousin. We'll have pictures up soon.
As if there weren't enough good things about August 26 already we learned of another good reason in Wired Magazine to like that particular Tuesday, The Two Towers comes out on DVD!!!. Visit lordoftherings.net for more information. As was the case last year, the extended edition of the DVD with 40 extra minutes of footage won't be available until November 18. ARRGGGH!!
(7/12) Ever have a hard time thinking of new passwords? This Computerworld article offers some great ideas for passwords that are both easy to remember and hard to guess.
Coming home was a lot of fun. Connie & Dan Harper along with the children Sandy and Brett decorated the front yeard with balloons, banners, and pictures. It was hard for Tom not to take credit, but probably the best way to let everyone in the neighborhood know Michael was home.
Our neighbor, Sue Nash generously offered to take Joshua to the library along with her daughter, Danielle for a weekly thing the library's doing for kids.
Michael entertained his first visitors at home. Carol Wild stopped by, as did Tom's parents Joan and Russell Gagne (yes, that's where Russell came from), and the Harpers. We're unsure how we missed getting pictures of Connie and Dan, but you'll have to trust us when we say they were there.
(7/11) Tom's brother, Charlie had some interesting comments on Michael's second day. First was, "Want a puppy?" But our favorite was when he asked Joshua if he liked having a little brother. "It's cool," Joshua said. And Charlie's reply? "That's what I thought at first."
Also stopping by were Conrad Krinock, Grandma Elmo, and Tom's brother David and his wife Lisa Smith. They're expecting their own arrival around July 23.
(7/10) We've got more pictures but they won't be up until this afternoon sometime after Tiffani and Michael come home.

Michael Russell Gagné has arrived!!! At 8:47 PM today (July 8) Tiffani gave birth to a healthy, 9 lb. 21 1/2" baby boy. When it was finally time Michael wasted no time requiring only six pushes to make his appearance.
Before visiting, give Tiffani a call at the hospital at (248) 964-3919. When you get there, do not park in the parking structure. Instead, follow the signs to the West Entrance and park there. Tif and Michael are on the 3rd floor in room 3919.
(7/8) So, will it be today or tomorrow? We don't know for sure, but were confident it will be one of the two. Tiffani's doctor is sending her to Troy Beaumont to be induced. Stay tuned.
What??? Still no baby? We know many of you visit this site looking for an announcement you expected would be here over a week ago. We appreciate your email and phone calls asking how Tiffani is fairing through this hot July weather carrying a child that might already be the size of a toddler. If you haven't given them already as presents, return the 3-6 month-old clothes for 12-18 month sizes. As far as when Michael will be born, we'll have to keep waiting. But to paraphrase Gandalf, "Michael is never late. Nor is he early. He arrives precisely when he means to."
For all the beef Tom eats you'd think his blood would have enough iron in it to have its own magnetic field. Not so! A recent blood test showed he still isn't eating enough red meat to push his red blood count out of the low range. Considering the already exhorbitant grocery bills he may have to find less expensive ways to push the compass, like multivitamin suppliments. Sure, they might work but how do you keep them from falling through the grates on his new grill?
(7/7) Steve Turner, owner of Arboricultural Services visited the Gagne's today to check out the elm tree in the backyard. He estimates the 80' tall tree to be 120 years old! He recommended a $300 chemical injection of 100 gallons to safeguard it from Dutch Elm's Disease. A small price to pay, in our opinion, to avoid the $9000 cost of removing this gem of a tree in case of infection. Besides being an all-around great guy, Steve also coaches a Ferndale Parks & Recreation Soccer team for kids ages six-eight.
(7/4) Anticipating a hot summer the Gagne's purchased one of those 12' x 30" blow-up pools. Before launching some fireworks of his own Joshua is seen here cooling off and playing air-guitar to one of his favorite Beach Boy CDs.

(6/30) Congratulations to Snowflake and the rest o the Gagnés in Dexter, MI. What a great way to start the week.
|
It's very early Monday morning and all is well in the world. Snowflake is the proud mom of seven adorable pups. Quite a mix. Two yellow, three black & two chocolate. Four girls and three boys. Wow! What an exhausting day. What an amazing event. Even the kids got to see all the action, although Andrew had to leave the room during the actual birth of each pup. Everything went fine. Thank God! So spread the word. We need to find good homes for these cuties. PS One pup missing in the picture. He came out while I was typing this. We thought we were done.

In the "for-what-it's-worth" section today we thought we'd mention the new "Win32SoBig@MM" worm found its way to our in-boxes today but caused no damage. "Why?" you ask? First, Linux users are unaffected by the virus though we enjoy the novelty of receiving infected emails with our Windows brethren and second, we don't open attachments from people we don't know or emails we're not expecting. You shouldn't either.
Have a great weekend! We'll keep everyone posted (here) when the baby arrives.
(6/27) The government's do not call database went online today. If you're tired of solicitor's phone calls at dinner time you can register up to three (3) phone numbers at a time that most telemarketers are prohibited from calling after October 1st. Naturally, the website is pretty busy today and we're experiencing timeouts trying to register our numbers, but we'll keep trying and recommend you do too.
You can read more about it in this Computerworld article.
Now if they could just do something about that guy from Nigeria who keeps asking for help recovering his money...
(6/26) Maybe senators and congressmen really are better than the rest of us. A quick read of this information on Social Security might inspire some to contact their representatives. I hope it at least suggests an issue for the 2004 election.
(6/24) Last night's dry run for the baby was both a surprise for Tom and more fun than expected. Tif (you know what a kidder she is) called Tom from Luxury Lanes around 4:20 PM and told him her water broke. Word has it both Connie Harper and Kelly Castle were in on the joke, both wearing their most "concerned-but-excited" expressions and offering to watch Joshua.
To maintain realism Tif called the doctor's office and was told to go there first before going to the hospital and potentially waiting for hours. This should have been my first clue. She finished packing her bag to take to the hospital, Joshua hurriedly packed one for himself to take to Brett Harper's, and Tom assembled tha cameras, batteries, chargers, tape, etc. to record the event for posterity.
It's unclear if the nurse was in on the false-emergency, but "the doctor" told Tif her water didn't break and she's no more dilated than she was last week. Josh and Tom handled the news pretty well, promising to save their joy dance for later. After returning home they all had huge baked potatoes for dinner, watched Kangeroo Jack and went to bed.
The good news is the test run helped discover Tif forgot to pack her glasses. Now we're ready for real thing.
Today the US Supreme Court issued rulings on two affirmative action involving the University of Michigan's undergraduate and law schools. You can download the opinions directly from the court's website:
(6/23) From the Great Lakes IT Report:
MICHIGAN ATTORNEY GENERAL: WATCH OUT FOR BEST BUY E-MAIL SCAM -- Michigan Attorney General Mike Cox Friday issued an alert regarding an e-mail being sent to residents in several states, including Michigan, with the subject line "Best Buy Order Fraud Alert." The e-mail claims that a recent online order has been received using the recipient's credit card information. The e-mail continues, "in our effort to deter fraudulent transactions, we need your help in providing us with correct information. Your prompt response is needed to avoid any unauthorized charges to your credit card." Cox said the messages are bogus -- Best Buy has nothing to do with them, and they're simply an attempt to harvest credit card numbers from the unsuspecting. (You can also tell because the messages don't originate from "@bestbuy.com" and because the link embedded in the message does not take the user to a "special Fraud Department page" on Best Buy's site, but to a page hosted under a completely different domain name. Oh, and by the way, there is no such organization as the "National Credit Bureau.") The message is similar to e-mails sent last summer to PayPal and eBay customers asking them to provide credit card and bank account numbers to "restore their accounts to fully operational status." Consumers who have replied to this or another fraudulent e-mail should contact your bank and/or credit card companies immediately. Also visit the Federal Trade Commission's Identity Theft website at www.consumer.gov/idtheft or call (877) ID-THEFT.
(6/20) Some of the best things about receiving Crain's Detroit daily e-newsletter are Bob Allen's editorial comments, headlines and alerts on Detroit area businesses, and nifty extras like this one about how New York City restaurants are coming up with menus for people on the Atkins low-carb diet. Too bad there aren't any Ferndale-area restaurants doing a similar thing (that we know of). We wonder what a low-carb pizza might look like.
Joshua's Wolf Den (from Cub Scout Pack #1543 had their graduation ceremony tonight and eight cubs made it. From left-to-right: Joshua Gagné, Marcus Barnett, Stephen Wroe, Drew Quinn, Aeneas Koosis, Jacob Castle, Conrad Keurejian, and Olanzo Palmer.
(6/19) Is there a compliment to the left-handed compliment (no offense intended to left-handers) called the left-handed gift? Father's Day was last Sunday and Tom's not sure what to make of the combination 16-oz. of Hershey's Dark Chocolate (his favorite) and a digital scale. It's right up there with including breathalizers in Bud Light 12-packs.
A good friend of our's, Scott Sobolewski, recently set us an email listing Men's Rules for Women. It resonates with a lot of truth and does so in a good toungue-in-cheek way. Rather than mail it to everybody and risk your losing it (accidentally or not) we've decided to post it on our website for posterity.
(6/12) Joshua's soccer team's picture day was last Saturday and we managed to squeeze out a few of our own while they were still clean (the other team forfeited). Keith, the kid with the arm cast on in the front row, sustained additional injuries when Tom tackled him in the parent-kid game that followed and ended-up stepping on Keith's leg. We're pretty sure Tom bruised a rib in the malee but he deserved it -- the big bully.
Tiffani took charge of the digitial camera on Memorial Day to capture these great pictures. Next time you see her tell her what a great job she did before she decides to replace our (nearly) worthless film camera. Of course, don't blame the jaggy edges on Tiffani, those are the fault of resizing the pictures with the software that came with the camera. Perhaps we'll upgrade to Adobe Photoshop or something...
(6/11) Tiffani has fewer than three weeks to go before her bond comes due, and the call may happen anytime now. When it does, we'll have pictures here of our new arrival as soon as possible--because we know you're as anxious to see him as we are!
(6/6) Yet another "Modern Major General" parody inspired by SCO's claim Linux infringes on its IP is available here for those of you in-the-know.
In Sunday's The Detroit News' business section there was a story about The Checker Bar & Grill and how they're hoping the new Compuware HQ will pick up business. What makes them story especially interesting is they quoted Tiffani. The reporter got several of the facts wrong (which leads me to think she may have freelanced at the New York Times). One of them being it wasn't Karen Munro that introduced Tiffani to her future husband Tom, but Karen's brother Michael who did the dirty deed in his own special way. Now that's a story worth printing!
(6/2) Crain's Detroit Business, a local rag covering everything "business" around and about Detroit is celebrating The Ford Motor Company's 100th anniversary with a special issue.
Included in both their online and print editions is a story Tom submitted in their "Memories of Ford" section. The print link includes a picture of both Tom and his grandfather, Charles Gagné. A small correction--Tom's father, Russell Gagné reminded us it wasn't the Rouge plant, but the Highland Park plant where this story takes place. Thanks, Russ.
(5/22) Email-protection vendor FrontBridge yesterday posted the top 10 ways your address ends-up in a Spammers list:
Sometimes it's necessary to use your email address on the internet. One way of masking it to hide it from Spam address collectors is to mangle the address so a human can figure out what it is but a computer can't, or at least won't take the time. Try using id at domain dot com instead of id@domain.com, or add extra characters to it then use a signature line at the bottom of your emails telling people how to fix the reply-to address. An email from id@wide-open-west.com could be accompanied by the instructions "remove dashes from email address for replies."
(5/13) Kismet (6/12/1991 - 5/13/2003) was put down yesterday. She was a great dog, and we'll miss her dearly. Her AKC registered name was Princess Kismet Gypsophila. Her mother, Princess Sheba Snow Angel, was a show dog and her sire, Hoof Print Lancer was a champion.
Gypsophila, for the non-botonists, is more commonly known as Baby's Breath. Its small white flowers are usually found in any boquet of roses.
While burning time before a wedding reception in Grand Blanc I read a sign advertising "White German Shepherd Pups" and followed it to Janice Drew's home where what remained of a seven-week old litter was running everywhere. Kismet was the smallest and hid under a trailer when I approached. I left a $65 deposit and returned the next day. I still have the wedding invitiation with my scribblings on the back with directions to the Drew's and my first notes about my new puppy and her parents.
Because I found her by chance I named her Kismet, from the Turkish qismat meaning fate or fortune, which itself comes from the Arabic qisma, meaning lot.
Our house is an emptier place without her.
(5/4) Saturday's baby shower for Tiffani was a whole lot of fun. If you were there you already know that. If you were there, maybe you'd like to see the pictures?
Joshua's school's entire second grade went to the Detroit Zoo today and here are a few hastily processed pictures.
Just wanted to let everyone know who hasn't already heard, the four major credit bureaus in the US will be allowed, starting July 1, to release your credit info, mailing addresses, phone numbers, etc., to anyone who requests it. If you would like to 'opt out' of this release of your info, you can call 1-888-567-8688. It only takes a couple of minutes to do.
Once the message starts you'll choose option #2 (even though option #1 refers to this E-mail) and then option #3 - Be sure to listen closely, the first option is only for a two-year period. Make sure you wait until they prompt for the third option, which opts you out forever. More information is available at the US Government Federal Trade Commission Web site at: www.ftc.gov/privacy/protect.htm.
Our neighborhood's own Nancy Goedert was interviewed by the The Free Press in their April 28th edition in the Metro section. The article, titled Metro Growth: Fight to stop sprawl moves into the country, talks about the affects of sprawl by visiting residents in two cities on the opposite ends of sprawl, but oddly on the same side of the debate: Ferndale and Orion Twp.
The best part of the article, if you got the print copy, is it included a picture of Nancy with the Lamphier's, our's, and Joe Haddad's homes behind her.
(4/30) This has been one of our favorite places to seek relief from the drudgery of pop lyrics and we're compelled to share it with you in our own special way. Be sure to visit the link. One of our favorites is the top one about Xena.
Of the greatest gifts to English operatic literature
was Modern Major General from Pirates of Penzance I'm sure
Its parodies are legend and preserved for our posterity
on the internet by authors rhyming with temerity
(4/29) We incorrectly specified the address for www.dyndns.org in an earlier What's New? item. These are the folks that provide the mechanism whereby people with cable or DSL modems can host their own website on their home computer. Neat stuff. Ever since switching from SBC/Ameritech to WideOpenWest we've been using them and they've been great.
(4/28) This weekend Tom went golfing with a bunch of crazies near Ft. Wayne, Indiana, and he's got the pictures to prove it! Of course, he's not in any of the pictures so perhaps he really wasn't there...
(4/23) Ever wonder where you *really* are on the political compass? Are you left or right? Authoritarian or Libertarian? Visit http://www.politcalcompass.org to see where you stand with the likes of other famous (and infamous) world leaders from the past and present. I scored a 2.25 on the Economic Left/Right (right-leaning) and a 0.82 on the Authoritarian/Libertarian scale (slightly Authoritarian leaning).
If you take the test, send me an email and let me know how you did.
(4/22) Want a deck of The Most Wanted Iraqis playing cards? FoxNews today reported you can visit http://www.greatusaflags.com for $5/deck. Some sites are selling them for $15/deck.
(4/10) With all the recent talk about Ferndale's school bond I thought I'd do a little research and find out exactly what taxes we're paying and do some quick comparisons to other cities. The document I'm working from is The Apportionment of Local Taxes for 2002.
I'd like to thank our county commissioner, Dave Coulter, for finding this document on their website, and Kimberly, from Dave Heiber's office for explaining the document to me.
Stay posted. I'll do my best to explain how it impacts you too.
The US Department of Defense has a web page where you can sign a "Thank You" card to our men and women in uniform. Signing it is painless and it's an easy way to let them know you care.
(3/25) Al-Jazeera has launched an English language website at http://english.aljazeera.net. Announced earlier in The Wall Street Journal, I've been unable to access it. Yahoo reported they were having technical trouble.
(3/21) Coalition troops are actively engaged in the liberation of Iraq from the dictatorial grip of Saddam Hussein. A couple interesting documents related to that are listed below.
Did the last one surprise you?
